"If you can imagine it, you can achieve it; if you can dream it, you can become it"
-William Arthur Ward
"Tell me and I'll forget. Show me, and I may not remember. Involve me, and I'll understand" -Native American Saying
I believe that being a teacher is a very important job, you are not only teaching their minds, but you are teaching students values in many aspects of their lives. I believe that the classroom is a safe place where students can express their opinions and ideas freely and not need to be worried about anything. A classroom is a place of discovery and learning, as well as a place to find out if the things you know are true or a misconception of what you have heard in your life. I also believe it is important that the classroom be a safe haven for students and that they know when they get to school they can put aside other issues that may be bothering them and concentrate on school and want to succeed. This can be achieved by being consistent with the rules and goals I have for my students. Having reachable expectations that won't overwhelm students but that will still challenge them to push themselves and get the best results that they can. Students need to believe in themselves and be able to think for themselves as well. I want to instill in my students the importance of critical thinking and questioning things around them.
One of the best ways to allow this to happen is to be consistent with any new class. This will start at the beginning of each year or semester having rules set out of my expectations and allowing the students to add their own goals in the classroom that will help them reach these expectations.
